STATE-WIDE SPECIAL DRIVE AGAINST MULE ACCOUNT HOLDERS

In a major crackdown on the cybercrime network in Tamil Nadu, the Cyber Crime Wing, Tamil Nadu Police, conducted a 48-hour "State-wide Special Drive against Mule Account Holders" on 6th and 7th August 2026, resulting in the arrest of 837 cyber criminals across the State. The operation focused on identifying persons involved in opening, providing, operating and facilitating the misuse of bank accounts for receiving and withdrawing proceeds of cyber fraud.

The operation was conducted under the direction and guidance of Dr. Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, IPS, DGP/HoPF, Tamil Nadu Police. The operation was meticulously planned by the Cyber Crime Wing and executed across all districts and cities of Tamil Nadu. Tmt. Bala Naga Devi, IPS, DGP, Cyber Crime Wing, supervised the entire operation from the Cyber Crime Wing Headquarters, ensuring seamless coordination and real-time monitoring throughout the drive.

The large-scale operation was based on accused profiling through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) and Pratibimb Portal of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordinatior tre (14C), Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The profiling was further stre ned through bank fund-trail linkages established by financial data analysis of cybercrime networks. Mule accounts are bank accounts used by cybercriminals to receive, transfer, layer, or withdraw money obtained through fraudulent and illegal activities. Individuals who allow their bank accounts to be used for such transactions facilitate the movement of illicit funds.

The operation targeted individuals linked to 9804 NCRP complaints involving fraudulent transactions amounting to Rs. 545,27,27,809/-.

During the operation, all the Police Stations across Tamil Nadu, under the supervision of the respective District Superintendents of Police and Commissioners of Police, arrested 837 cyber criminals involved in 601 FIRS registered in cybercrime cases. In addition, 157 new FIRs were registered across the State to curb the misuse and operation of mule bank accounts for facilitating cyber fraud.

During the State-wide drive, 204 mobile phones, 185 SIM cards, 4 laptops/desktops, 1 pen drive/storage device, ₹1,02,000 in cash, 114 bank passbooks, 29 cheque books, 73 ATM/debit cards, 1 credit card and 2 other electronic devices were seized. In addition, 155 mobile numbers and 58 bank account details were identified for further investigation and analysis.

These arrests mark a significant achievement in disrupting and dismantling the organized cybercrime network operating across the State. The operation stands as one of the largest coordinated drives of its kind in India, striking at a critical component of the cybercrime ecosystem-the use of mule accounts for the receipt, layering, and movement of illicit funds.

Further investigation into the wider cybercrime network is underway. The Tamil Nadu Police are analyzing the digital evidence seized and interrogating the arrested individuals to uncover further layers of the criminal network and identify their associates operating across India. Concerted efforts are also being undertaken to trace and apprehend other members of the network, recover defrauded funds, and establish wider linkages with nationwide cybercrime operations.

The arrested individuals will be subjected to stringent legal action in accordance with law. The arrests also serve as a strong deterrent to persons involved in facilitating cyber fraud through the provision or misuse of bank accounts.

The State-wide Special Drive against Mule Account Holders marks a significant step towards disrupting the financial infrastructure supporting cybercrime, strengthening the State's cybercrime enforcement mechanism, and ensuring greater safety and security for citizens in cyberspace.
